Sun, rain and the exposure conversation

An entrance beneath a deep porch and one standing directly in the weather are not equivalent settings. Before falling in love with a finish, describe the actual exposure to the supplier. Include orientation, shelter and any conditions you have noticed during heavy rain or strong afternoon sun.

Photographs taken at different times can help explain the situation. A shadow in a listing photograph may not be present through the rest of the day. Likewise, a small overhang may shelter the top of the opening without protecting the lower portion.

Ask whether the proposed product and finish are suitable for those conditions and what the manufacturer requires. Read the care and warranty information for the specific assembly rather than assuming a general exterior label answers every exposure question.

If the entrance has an existing water problem, have it assessed before treating a new door as the cure. The surrounding building details may be part of the issue. Good design begins with an honest account of the site, even when that leads to a different finish or a broader professional conversation than you first expected.
