What an arched opening asks of a new door

The curve may belong to the wall, the frame or the door itself. Those are different design problems.

An arched entrance has a strong personality before a finish is selected. The first useful question is not which curved door to buy, but which part of the existing opening actually creates the arch. Sometimes a rectangular door sits beneath a glazed or solid arched area; sometimes the leaf itself follows the curve.

Photograph the opening from inside and outside and have it measured professionally. A picture alone cannot establish the shape, clearances or construction behind the trim. Keeping an existing arch may be a straightforward visual decision but a more involved fabrication and installation decision.

Let the curve remain the principal gesture. Simple panels below it can be more persuasive than additional curved motifs, decorative glass and elaborate hardware. A restrained finish also allows the changing shadow around the arch to stay visible.

If you prefer a rectangular door, do not assume the whole opening must lose its character. Ask an architect or qualified installer to explain the available configurations. The aim is to understand the existing architecture before committing to a solution that is expensive to reverse.
