Planters beside the door: scale, spacing and restraint

The right planter can soften a hard-edged facade and connect a door to its landscape. The wrong arrangement can make the entrance feel like the storage area of a garden center. Start with the available ground space and the mature size of the plant, not just the pot as it appears in the shop.

Two identical planters create a formal frame, but they require enough room on both sides to look comfortable. One larger composition can be better for an asymmetrical porch. Give the door room to operate and leave the handle area easy to approach.

Choose the container in conversation with the architecture. A quiet surface allows foliage to provide the detail. If the door already has a strong color, a second bright accent may dilute its effect rather than complement it.

Consider watering, drainage and seasonal care before placing a container against a frame or wall. Keep water from being routinely directed onto door components, and follow maintenance guidance for adjacent materials. A planting scheme is successful when it still makes sense between its best photographic moments, including the months when growth slows down.
