Designing the inside face of your front entrance

The door belongs to the hallway as much as it belongs to the facade.

Most door searches begin with an exterior photograph. Yet the inside face is the one you may see every morning and evening. Give it a place in the interior palette before making the final selection.

Consider the view from the room that looks toward the entry. A strongly contrasting door can create a deliberate endpoint. A finish closer to the trim can make a compact hallway feel less visually divided. Neither approach requires the exterior to tell the same color story, if the chosen system offers different finishes on each side.

Hardware and nearby storage need to cooperate. A beautiful internal lever loses its appeal when coats catch on it, and a new door should not open into a console table that has nowhere else to go. Sketch the full swing and include everyday objects rather than an idealized empty hall.

Finally, notice how glazing changes the interior throughout the day. The view, privacy and light pattern matter more than the pane’s appearance in isolation. Test the complete idea from both sides of the threshold; it is one of the few design elements that has to feel at home in two different settings.
